What makes a great Pathfinder™ candidate?

A great Pathfinder™ candidate has analytical thinking, a STEM background or equivalent aptitude, real motivation to learn, clear communication and reliability. You don't need pricing experience. We select for aptitude and attitude, then teach the pricing skills through the 10-week Pathfinders™ Academy. The best applications show each quality with a real example.

You might be closer to Pathfinder™ material than you think. Recent graduates, career returners, career changers and ex-forces people can all be strong applicants. If you're still deciding whether pricing is for you, start with Why insurance pricing could be your next career.

What is a Pathfinder™?

Someone who trains through the Pathfinders™ Academy and is then deployed into an insurance pricing team. The Academy runs for 10 weeks and builds the tools, thinking and business context pricing needs. After it, Pathfinders join client pricing teams on an initial contract, typically 24 months, with the option for the insurer to take them on permanently. They make an impact from day one.

What qualities do we look for in a Pathfinder™?

Five, and you can show each one on your application.

Analytical thinking

Do you enjoy solving problems, spotting patterns or working with numbers? Pricing comes down to modelling risk, understanding trends and making decisions from data.

Show it: give a specific example, such as a project, dissertation or piece of work where you used data to reach a conclusion.

A STEM background, or the aptitude to match

We welcome STEM backgrounds such as maths, physics, engineering, computer science and economics. We also look at your ability to learn technical tools, not just your degree title. If you're curious and logical, that counts.

Show it: if your degree title doesn't sound technical, list the modules, projects or software that involved data, coding or modelling.

Motivation to learn

You don't need to know everything on day one, but you do need to get stuck in, ask questions and keep developing. Pricing keeps changing, so a real interest in learning matters.

Show it: describe something you picked up quickly, whether a tool, a skill or a subject outside your course.

Clear communication

Pricing sits between data and decisions. You'll need to explain what your analysis shows and work with colleagues who aren't technical.

Show it: write your CV in plain English. Say what you did and why it mattered, and skip jargon you can't explain.

Professionalism and reliability

Whether you're starting out or coming back from a break, we want people who are committed, dependable and ready to show up.

Show it: if your CV has a gap, explain it briefly and honestly. A career break isn't something to hide.

What else helps an application?

None of these are essential, but they help: experience with Excel, Python, SQL or similar tools; an interest in insurance, data or modelling; a structured way of working; resilience; and a clear reason for choosing this path. Say why pricing, and why now, in a sentence or two.

What will I learn on the Pathfinders™ Academy?

The Academy is mostly online, through modules you work through at your own pace, live training and webinars with the pricing team, with some in-person days. It covers SQL, Python, MI, GLMs, segmentation, monitoring, GBMs, Radar, deployment and testing, governance and Consumer Duty, communication and power skills, and insurance sector knowledge and business acumen. You can meet the trainers on our experts page, and our FAQs for Pathfinders answer the common questions.

Ready to apply?

If you recognise yourself in any of this, register your interest with your details and a CV. We will be in touch if you are a good fit for our next Academy.
